Plans for an electricity substation covering 200 acres of Angus farmland have attracted 1,700 objections. The application is seeking permission to build a substation platform at Balkemback Farm in Tealing and was lodged by SSEN last November. If approved, it will be the size of nearly 30 football pitches. The proposed location is at the southern end of a line of planned ‘super-pylons’ which SSEN wants to run from Aberdeenshire to Angus.

Introduced in February 2025 and now at Stage 1 of the parliamentary process, the Bill puts forward measures to protect Scotland’s natural environment. Robert Scott-Dempster and Fiona Scott, land and rural business experts at Gillespie Macandrew, outline the Bill’s principal proposals. The Natural Environment (Scotland) Bill forms part of the Scottish Government’s Strategic Framework for Biodiversity, setting natural restoration targets to reduce carbon emissions and protect biodiversity in Scotland.

An advert for French oil and gas giant TotalEnergies has been banned in the UK for misleading consumers over the firm’s environmental impact. Campaign group Adfree cities complained that the paid-for X post in May focused on the firm’s renewable wind energy projects while failing to mention that its operations remained mostly based in fossil fuels. TotalEnergies said it could not include more information about its business practices within the ad due to the constraints of the medium, but its website made clear that it was involved in oil and gas.

Energy network bosses hope that a revised route for taking energy to England will appease at least some rural residents of the Scottish Borders. Since plans for the Cross Border Connection were revealed last year protest groups have been formed in communities near the proposed pylons. Following the backlash, Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) have altered several sections of the 57-mile route between Lauder and the border, south of Newcastleton.
