The former Hunterston B power station in North Ayrshire has been formally declared nuclear free after three years of defuelling.
The site generated its final power in January 2022 after 46 years of operation - two decades longer than originally planned.
The site's eventual closure was sealed when hairline cracks were found in the graphite bricks which make up its nuclear cores.

Plans to build Scotland’s largest salmon farm off the coast of Shetland have sparked concerns among fishermen and environmental groups. Fears have been raised that a proposed new quarry near Elgin could drive people away from a rural community. Aberdeen-based firm Leiths (Scotland) Ltd has submitted a planning application to Moray Council for the sand and gravel quarry and cement works. Residents have said the site near the village of Thomshill is less than a 330ft (100m) from some people's homes and the noise and dust would cause people to move away. Leiths planning application said there would be no significant noise or dust impacts. BBC Scotland News has approached them for comment.

A £636,000 solar project which will help pump water to thousands of customers in South Ayrshire is now complete. The scheme, which will help save 78 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year, has seen 793 roof and ground mounted solar panels installed at the Gorbals water pumping station, as well as on top of the neighbouring large drinking water tank. The panels are expected to generate 0.39GWh of energy annually – the same as boiling 1.7 million kettles – which will meet almost 17% of the site’s power needs.

Shares in Deltic Energy leapt by 25% from a historically low base after the company disclosed that a key North Sea prospect is estimated to contain significantly greater recoverable gas volumes than previously thought. The energy minnow declared the Selene gas discovery it is aiming to develop with Shell is now estimated to contain 174 billion cubic feet (BCF) of gross 2C contingent resources - 33% more than previously estimated. It updated its forecast of the value it expects to generate for gas extracted from the well.

Scotland is set to keep selling more and more of its mackerel to Japan thanks to a renewed trade agreement struck by industry leaders this week. In the last four years, Scottish mackerel imports to Japan have risen sharply from 2% of the total market to 20%. Seafood Scotland, the independent trade and marketing body for the nation’s seafood industry, is hoping to grow that trend by sending even more fish to Japan in the coming year. The new Scotland-Japan mackerel deal launched on Monday is the fourth in four years in a row.

Scotland’s seabird population continues to decline but some species are showing signs of recovery, new figures have shown. The data, from the Scottish Government’s nature agency NatureScot, chart breeding numbers for 11 of the 24 species of seabirds that breed in Scotland, over the period 1986-2023. They also document the “breeding success” – or the number of chicks produced – for 12 species over the same period. The figures show that between 1986 and 2023, the 11 species assessed for breeding numbers were down 48 per cent overall, with Arctic skua showing the worst decline at 83 per cent.

The landscape of Royal Deeside is being restored by a charity to help tackle climate change. The River Dee Trust has pledged to plant a million trees to provide shade and has now reached half of its overall target. Rising temperatures have had a devastating impact on the River Dee, with the water now too warm to support the salmon there, which the river is famous for. River Dee Trust chair Sandy Bremner told STV News: “Salmon are under threat from rapidly rising temperatures, peak temperatures put salmon under thermal stress. It’s a few degrees from being lethal for salmon.”

The closure of Grangemouth oil refinery in Scotland is "not comparable" to the situation at British Steel in Scunthorpe, MPs have been told. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said an emergency law aimed at saving the Lincolnshire site from closure was an "exceptional situation". SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn challenged Reynolds over similarities to the closure of the Scottish refinery on the Firth of Forth - with the loss of 400 jobs. It came during a rare Saturday sitting of parliament to pass legislation to save the British Steel plant.

Plans for an electricity substation covering 200 acres of Angus farmland have attracted 1,700 objections. The application is seeking permission to build a substation platform at Balkemback Farm in Tealing and was lodged by SSEN last November. If approved, it will be the size of nearly 30 football pitches. The proposed location is at the southern end of a line of planned ‘super-pylons’ which SSEN wants to run from Aberdeenshire to Angus.

An advert for French oil and gas giant TotalEnergies has been banned in the UK for misleading consumers over the firm’s environmental impact. Campaign group Adfree cities complained that the paid-for X post in May focused on the firm’s renewable wind energy projects while failing to mention that its operations remained mostly based in fossil fuels. TotalEnergies said it could not include more information about its business practices within the ad due to the constraints of the medium, but its website made clear that it was involved in oil and gas.

Energy network bosses hope that a revised route for taking energy to England will appease at least some rural residents of the Scottish Borders. Since plans for the Cross Border Connection were revealed last year protest groups have been formed in communities near the proposed pylons. Following the backlash, Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) have altered several sections of the 57-mile route between Lauder and the border, south of Newcastleton.

A conservation project has secured nearly £100,000 towards removing every hedgehog from a group of islands in the Western Isles.
The animals are not native to the Hebrides and are blamed for eating the eggs of ground-nesting birds, causing severe declines of several species. A new project - Saving Uist Nature (SUN) - would trap hedgehogs in South Uist and Benbecula and release them on mainland Scotland.

Ripple Energy, which ran the Kirk Hill wind farm in South Ayrshire and the Whitelaw Brae wind farm in the Scottish Borders – which is still under development – called in liquidators in March. Administrators with Begbies Traynor said they were in “advanced discussions with a number of interested parties” about a takeover of Ripple, adding that there was likely to be “no disruption to the service during the sale process”.

Arran Community Renewables, a Community Benefit Society based on the Isle of Arran, has been granted planning consent for a 6 MW solar farm, with the aim of generating 5,600MWh of clean renewable energy from 2027. Glenkiln Solar Farm will be located around 1km west of Lamlash and will provide enough renewable energy to meet one quarter of the island’s domestic power needs.

Scotland’s carbon footprint jumped by almost 15% in 2021 to reach its highest level since 2015, figures show. It’s the biggest annual increase since records began 23 years ago. Greenhouse gas emissions rose from 51.6 to 59.2 million tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in 2021 – an increase of 14.6%. It follows a sharp decrease in emissions sparked by the Covid pandemic the year before. Transport emissions during that time fell by 23.9% but partially bounced back by 13.1% the year after.

The compulsory deer management control scheme could see Scotland's nature agency, NatureScot, step in to reduce numbers of the animals on Loch Choire Estate in Sutherland. The electricity network in the north of Scotland will be improved with a £450m investment by the end of the decade, an energy firm has announced. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said the work would create at least 300 skilled jobs. SSEN also said it would make existing supplies "more resilient" and support decarbonisation of communities and industry by connecting solar panels and heat pumps to the network.

The Scottish Government is holding an emergency meeting over an ongoing wildfire in a woodland park. Large areas of Galloway Forest Park have been alight since Thursday, sometime before 4.14pm. Justice Secretary Angela Constance was chairing the meeting on Sunday. The fire began in the Dumfries and Galloway area of the park, but has since spread up to Loch Doon, East Ayrshire.

Scotmid Co-op is one of five co-operative society members to sign a 10-year corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with RWE to supply electricity from renewable energy sources to more than 400 locations across the UK. The deal will see around 280 trading sites - including Scotmid, Semichem and Scotmid Funerals stores - supplied by the green energy source. Starting on 1 April, the contract will provide up to 53 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity per year, sourced from the London Array offshore wind farm in the outer Thames Estuary.

Firefighters remain at the scene of a blaze at a recycling centre in North Lanarkshire for a third day. Emergency services, including six fire engines, six ambulances, a trauma team and a resuscitation rapid response unit, were sent to Blairlinn Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld after a fire broke out around 2.30pm on Tuesday. Six casualties, all men aged between 20 and 66, were taken to hospitals by the Scottish Ambulance Service for treatment.

Firefighters have warned of an "extreme" risk of wildfires across all areas of Scotland over the next week. It comes as crews tackled a large blaze in the Kilpatrick Hills near Glasgow on Tuesday, while gorse was set alight in a deliberate fire in Banchory, Aberdeenshire. It is the third wildfire warning issued by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) this year as the weather gets warmer and drier.

A collaboration of wildlife organisations has warned that it could take almost 70 years for large-scale nature restoration to be under way across 30% of Scotland. More than 20 organisations, under the umbrella of the Scottish Rewilding Alliance (SRA), said rewilding is currently under way across 2.5% of the country’s land, with 195,615 hectares rewilding. This is an increase of 32,985 hectares since the alliance’s last assessment one year ago, which reported that 2.1% of Scotland’s land was rewilding.

A ban preventing the burning of heather and other vegetation across swathes of peatland will be expanded under Government plans. The Environment Department (Defra) said it will consult on increasing the protected area from 220,000 to more than 368,000 hectares of England’s deep peat – an area equivalent to the size of London, Manchester and the West Midlands put together. The ban would apply to more than half of the country’s 677,250 hectares of blanket bog, including the entire area of upland deep peat.

Scotland generated a record amount of energy from renewables last year – with data also showing the electricity generated north of the border helped power the rest of the UK. Renewable sources such as onshore and offshore wind, hydro power and solar generated a total of 38.4 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in 2025 – an increase of 13.2% on the previous year and 8.4% higher than the previous peak of 35.5 TWh, which was recorded in 2022.

More than 30 people have been brought ashore after a cargo ship travelling from the Scottish port of Grangemouth collided with an oil tanker in the North Sea, causing a “massive fireball”.
